Artist Statement
My art is inspired by mythology, nature, and the folk tales which were an inherent part of my traditional upbringing in Bali.
Balinese art plays an important part in ceremonies and is frequently discarded afterwards. It is used to portray ceremonial occasions, establishing a need for spatial orientation, balancing and arranging the universe. My paintings often tell a story; and the techniques I use reflect that need for balance and spatial clarity, as well as the traditional methods of painting.
As traditions have informed my art, evolution has helped develop it; technically with the use of Western color and perspective, and spiritually with the growth of the "modern" world and the need to balance one's connection with the past, reflecting both my Balinese origin and my individuality.
